Dallas-Fort Worth Hindu community celebrates Diwali

The event was attended by dignitaries and leaders from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities, along with city officials and mayors.

The Hindu community of Dallas-Fort Worth recently came together for the “Sparkle of Joy,” a Diwali celebration that drew over 150 attendees from across the region. 

Hosted at the home of Pankaj and Mahima Kumar, the event was a blend of cultural pride and community unity. The organizers expressed their gratitude to the dignitaries, community leaders, and attendees for making the “Sparkle of Joy” celebration a success. As Mahesh Chamaria of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh observed, “This event is a testament to the power of togetherness in fostering harmony and understanding in the diverse DFW metroplex.”

The attendees included county judges, commissioners, mayors, city officials, and representatives from the Consul General of India. Leaders from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities, representing more than 80 temples and organizations across the region, gathered to celebrate this festival of lights.

Mayor Wes Mays of Coppell shared the event’s optimism and forward-looking spirit, saying, “Our future is so bright, we all have to wear shades.”

Priya Pandit, a member of the Hindu American Foundation was MC for the evening. The program started with Hemant Kale, a member of Swayamseval Sangh, blowing the conch shell and lamp lighting ceremony by Pankaj Kumar and Counsel Prashant Sona from the Consulate General of India in Houston. Later on, Sona addressed the audience, he spoke about the significance of Diwali, and then mayors and city officials from various parts of the metroplex took the stage.

The notable speakers included Mayor Wes Mays of Coppell, Mayor Steve Babick of Carrollton, Mayor Bruce Arfsten of Addison, and District Court Judge Andrea Stroh Thompson from Collin County.

Mayor Bruce Arfsten of Addison said, “The Hindu community of DFW has contributed immensely to the development of the entire region ー in our businesses, our schools, and in our civic life.”

The celebrations also included an Odissi dance performance by an Odia artist, whose graceful movements and expressive storytelling beautifully conveyed the spirit of Diwali.  

Gitesh Desai, president of Sewa International's Dallas chapter, concluded the formal program by thanking attendees and contributors for their support. The evening continued with a dinner celebrating the flavors of Indian tradition. Guests also enjoyed a musical performance by two acclaimed artists from Sangeet Bharati, creating an enchanting and harmonious ambiance.

Mayor Steve Babick of Carrollton noted, “Diwali is becoming an integral part of our culture, and the Hindu Indian community is one of the fastest-growing populations in the DFW area.”

The DFW Hindu community recently received proclamations from over ten cities, including Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Prosper, Allen, and Flower Mound, recognizing Diwali’s cultural and spiritual significance. Sewa Diwali, a nationwide food drive initiative, also earned praise through these proclamations, highlighting the Hindu community's commitment to service and humanitarian efforts.
