Deepak Agarwal joins LinkedIn as chief AI officer

Agarwal brings 24 years of AI and engineering experience, with leadership roles at Pinterest and Yahoo, driving AI innovations for professionals and businesses.

LinkedIn has appointed Deepak Agarwal as its chief AI officer. This new stint marks his return to the company where he previously served as vice president of AI for eight years from 2012 to 2020. 

In this new role, Agarwal will lead the team responsible for pushing the boundaries of AI, ensuring that innovations are not only cutting-edge and industry-defining but also ethical, inclusive, human-centric, and empathetic. 

In an official notice of appointment on Jan. 24, LinkedIn stated, “We’re thrilled to welcome Deepak Agarwal back as our new Chief AI Officer. Deepak will lead the team focused on pushing the boundaries of AI, ensuring that LinkedIn’s innovations are not only cutting-edge and industry-defining but also ethical, inclusive, human-centric, and empathetic.”

Sharing his appointment news, Agarwal wrote on LinkedIn, “I am thrilled to share that I’m joining LinkedIn as the company’s Chief AI Officer. This is my second stint leading AI at LinkedIn, with my last tour being VP of AI for 8 years, where our team developed remarkable innovations at a massive scale that serve as the foundation for much of the company’s AI efforts today.”

With over 24 years of experience in engineering and AI, Deepak Agarwal has held leadership roles at Pinterest as Chief AI Officer and VP of Consumer and Trust Engineering, as well as at Yahoo. His extensive expertise underscores his commitment to advancing AI technologies that empower professionals and businesses.

In his LinkedIn post, Agarwal further mentioned, “LinkedIn has a long and impressive history of using AI to transform the way professionals and businesses connect, learn, and grow. AI is at the heart of everything we do—from personalizing member experiences to help them grow their knowledge and access to opportunity to empowering businesses and fostering meaningful professional relationships.

During his first stint at LinkedIn, Agarwal played a key role in developing AI innovations, laying the groundwork for the company's current AI efforts. As Chief AI Officer, his goal is to drive AI innovations that improve user experiences and foster meaningful professional connections.
