The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) has endorsed two candidates, Del. Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh, as pivotal figures in Virginia’s upcoming special elections on Jan. 7, 2025.

These elections, determining the legislative majorities in both chambers, are seen as a critical test of voter sentiment following the federal red wave in the 2024 elections.

Del. Kannan Srinivasan, the first Indian American immigrant elected to the Virginia House, is vying for Senate District 32, vacated by Suhas Subrahmanyam, who was elected to the US House of Representatives.

Known for his advocacy for working families, Srinivasan has supported policies like free school meals, expanded mental health resources in schools, and increased access to affordable healthcare. “These are values I’ll continue to champion in the Senate,” Srinivasan stated.

JJ Singh, running for House District 26, is a Northern Virginia native with a background in business and the Peace Corps. His campaign emphasizes lowering the cost of living, addressing gun violence, and fostering sustainable economic growth. “I’m committed to making the American dream accessible to every Virginian,” Singh said.

DLCC President Heather Williams highlighted the stakes, stating, “Virginia’s special elections are a bellwether for the battles ahead. Protecting these slim Democratic majorities is critical to countering Republican policies under the incoming Trump administration.”
