Telugu actor Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr's latest release an action-packed epic Devara: Part 1, featuring Saif Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor released in the theaters on Sept. 27. Initially planned as a single film, Devara has now been divided into two parts.
The film’s position became a major hit abroad as it crossed the US$ 5 million mark in the North American box office. The Telugu film is performing strongly in India, and is continuing its dominance in North America, one of the largest overseas markets for Telugu cinema.
Devara: Part 1, had an impressive opening weekend, grossing US$5 million and surpassing Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, which earned US$4 million.
The premiere of the Telegu film earned US$ 2.85 million, and in the following five days including the weekends the film earned over US$ 2.4 million.
With a breakeven point set at $5.5 million and no major competition until Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan releases next week, Devara: Part 1 is expected to cross this milestone soon. The Telugu movie has now become Jr NTR's top-grossing solo film in North America.
Jr NTR has been gaining international recognition since the success of RRR last year, which made waves globally and saw its song "Naatu Naatu" win an Oscar. The next project Jr NTR working on is War 2, this movie features Hrithik Roshan and Kiara Advani, which is part of the YRF Spy Universe.
