The Indian diaspora, according to India's Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar, will play an important part in promoting international digital partnerships in this era of technological advancement.
Speaking about the contributions of the diaspora at the New Delhi launch of the 'Indiaspora BCG Impact Report' on Aug.13, Jaishankar highlighted the diaspora's unique capacity to build trust and establish connections in key sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor technology.
“The Indian diaspora can help create synergy for digital collaborations that will benefit world economies while simultaneously aiding India in developing a skilled workforce for emerging technologies,” he said adding that this vision aligns with the Union Budget 2024-2025, which focuses on employment and skilling initiatives with a significant central outlay of US$ 24 billion (Rs 2 lakh crore).
According to Jaishankar, the Indian diaspora is largely responsible for the advancements in cutting-edge technology, especially in the fields of semiconductor manufacturing and chip design. He emphasized the significance of Global Capability Centres (GCCs), which are being established in India and are supported by the expertise of the diaspora.
In his address, Jaishankar reflected on the evolution of the Indian diaspora from a relatively small community to one of the most dynamic and influential groups globally. "Today, the Indian diaspora is not just a bridge between India and the world, but a vital part of India's global strategy," he asserted.
"The diaspora has been a powerful force in shaping a positive image of India abroad. Their success stories resonate globally, and their achievements have become synonymous with India's potential," he added.
Particularly noteworthy, in his view, is the Indian diaspora's capacity to keep close cultural ties to India even as it makes substantial contributions to the progress of the nations to which it has relocated. "Unlike many other immigrant communities, the Indian diaspora has managed to keep a deep connection with their homeland, which has only strengthened over generations. This bond is a key asset for India as it navigates an increasingly complex global landscape," Jaishankar remarked.
The Boston Consulting Group Impact Report, commissioned by Indiaspora, highlights the economic, social, and cultural contributions of the Indian diaspora, which is estimated to be over 30 million strong. The report details the diaspora's excellence in diverse fields such as technology, healthcare, and academia, and its significant influence on policy making and bilateral relations, particularly between India and the United States.
