Indian Minister of Labour and Employment and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya called on diaspora youth to take a central role in shaping India’s future as a developed nation by 2047.

Speaking on the theme, “Beyond Borders: Diaspora Youth Leadership in a Globalized World” at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2025 on Jan.8, he said, “Youth and diaspora are the driving force behind a developed India.”

A Vision for 2047

Mandaviya outlined the Prime Minister’s vision of a developed India by the centenary of its independence, emphasizing the demographic advantage of a youthful population.

“Thirteen out of 20 Indians are below 35. This is an unparalleled strength we must leverage for innovation, leadership, and nation-building,” he said.

Mandaviya highlighted how global exposure and experiences of the diaspora could propel India toward becoming a global leader. Drawing parallels to Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India in 1915, Mandaviya urged the diaspora to channel their international experiences into nation-building.

“Gandhi’s lessons from Africa fueled our freedom struggle. Today, the diaspora can similarly contribute to India’s development,” he said.

He praised initiatives like the Tweet for Developed India competition, which engaged over 30 lakh Indian youth to present ideas for the country’s future, with selected participants set to interact with the Prime Minister at the National Youth Festival later this week.

Mandaviya also highlighted the role of youth during the pandemic, particularly in the vaccine rollout. “Our young scientists and healthcare workers ensured 220 million doses were administered, even in the remotest corners of the country,” he said.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, held annually, recognizes the contributions of the global Indian diaspora while fostering connections to drive India’s growth story. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the event on Jan. 9.
