The Mamaroneck Library, New York, hosted a Diwali celebration on Nov. 9 that brought together Rye, Larchmont, New Rochelle, Harrison, and Mamaroneck community members.
U.S. Representative-Elect George Latimer, who has served as Westchester County Executive and as a State Senator and Assemblyman, opened the event with a speech on cultural diversity and community spirit. He later met with local advocates Shree Seth and the youngest, 8-year-old Samara Karkara, founder of #TheSheroesPledge, to discuss ways to increase community involvement.
Community leaders Sonal Seth and Terry Numa organized the event, celebrated the Hindu festival of lights, and aimed to foster cultural connection and unity.
Attendees shared insights about various cultural traditions, including the Jewish use of light during Hanukkah, the Latin celebration of Día de los Muertos with marigolds and candles, and Christian candle-lighting customs.
This year’s celebration featured diya painting, henna tattoos, and a sari-wearing demonstration, with many attendees dressed in traditional Indian attire, creating a festive and colorful atmosphere.
