Dr Shiv Kumar Sarin, an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, translational scientist, researcher and teacher, advised that people should not outsource their health and rather be the owner of their health at an event held at the Indian Consulate in New York. The statement implied that individuals should take personal responsibility for their own health and well-being.
“Health cannot be given,” the Padma Bhushan awardee said. “Health has to be earned.”

Dr Sarin delivered a comprehensive message on health and wellness, while discussing his book ‘Own Your Body’ at the Indian Consulate in New York. In the book, Dr Sarin unlocks the secrets to becoming a healthier version of yourself.
At the event, Dr Sarin outlined 10 commandments for optimal health, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures, such as maintaining a healthy family tree to identify genetic health risks.
“The first commandment is to make a family tree. You are responsible to make sure that your child is healthy. You are responsible to see that a baby who is in the womb remains healthy,” Dr Sarin shared.
He discussed the crucial role of the liver in metabolism and overall health. He explained how fatty liver can lead to various health complications, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Dr Sarin also provided practical self-testing tips for assessing liver health, such as monitoring blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and liver enzyme levels. He encouraged proactive health management through early detection and lifestyle adjustments.
He also presented four lifelines for achieving and maintaining health. “The first lifeline is slim and fit. It's not lean, it is slim and fit. And what is fit, you need to know. Number two is when to eat, what to eat, and how much to eat,” Dr Sarin said. “The third is a restorative sleep and my last fourth lifeline is about medicines. Don't use the fourth lifeline unless you have exhausted the first three lifelines,” he added.
