A new documentary delves into call center scams, exposing the criminal networks operating from India, that target innocent people worldwide, particularly senior citizens.

The film titled ‘Bogus Phone Operators,’ is based on the Thane call center scam which operated for three years between 2013 to 2016, targeting 15,000 US citizens who incurred losses over US $50 million.

Released on OTT platform DocuBay, the investigative crime documentary is produced by Nirvaan Entertainment. It reveals how an organized gang of confident tricksters defrauded thousands of Americans of millions of dollars, shocking the law and order authorities in India and the FBI. The documentary is directed by Satyaprakash Upadhyay.

Girish Dwibhashyam, COO, DocuBay, said, “The shocking ‘Thane Call Centre Scam’ compelled us to act. The story of hundreds of employees in a seemingly legitimate call centre in Mumbai suburbs allegedly swindling thousands of Americans needed to be shared with global audiences.”

The film was developed in collaboration with experts, media, lawyers, and call center employees. Research and collaboration with the Indian police authorities and the FBI helped the makers establish contact with victims who shared first-hand accounts of how the scam impacted their lives.

It highlights how the criminal networks continue operating with impunity, despite law enforcement efforts, and the need for international cooperation and heightened awareness.

“It's a film which is the need of the hour…Big thanks to everyone who has supported us in this challenging but exciting project to produce,” Yule Kurup of Nirvaan Entertainment wrote on LinkedIn.

The movie started streaming on March 8. DocuBay is an international documentary streaming service from India’s IN10 Media Network.
