Philadelphia-based Drexel University has appointed Neville Vakharia, as the next dean of its Pennoni Honors College, effective Sept.1, 2024.
Currently serving as associate dean of research and planning and associate professor of arts administration and museum leadership at the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, Vakharia has a wealth of experience in strategic planning, social impact, and the integration of technology in the arts and nonprofit sectors.
Vakharia’s research, which focuses on data-informed decision-making and systems-based approaches, has received substantial funding from notable institutions such as the Mellon Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Most recently, he secured a US$ 742,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for a project aimed at developing sustainable revenue strategies for cultural institutions.
Before joining Drexel, Vakharia held leadership positions at W. L. Gore & Associates, Prince Music Theater, the Arts + Business Council for Greater Philadelphia, and The Pew Charitable Trusts. His career transition from engineering to the arts underscores his diverse expertise and adaptability.
As dean, Vakharia aims to enhance the intellectual community of Pennoni Honors College and elevate its visibility and reputation on regional, national, and global scales. He succeeds Dean Paula Marantz Cohen, who will return to the faculty after a decade of distinguished leadership, the university said.
Denis O’Brien, Drexel's interim president, expressed his confidence in Vakharia's appointment, stating, "Dr. Vakharia’s interdisciplinary expertise and commitment to academic excellence make him an outstanding choice to lead the Pennoni Honors College. We look forward to his contributions to the College's continued success."
Neville Vakharia holds a PhD in Information Science, an MS in Arts Administration, and a BS in Materials Engineering from Drexel University.
