The Dublin City Council recently declared October 2023 as the Hindu American Awareness and Appreciation Month. This proclamation adds to a growing list of cities acknowledging the contributions of Hindu Americans in the US.
With this proclamation, the city seeks to recognize the valuable contributions of its Hindu residents and promote greater awareness of their community. It highlights that approximately 3.4 million Hindu Americans are spread across the country and they “represent diverse ethnic backgrounds” and promote tolerance, religious freedom and pluralism. “...diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and the City of Dublin joins with all those around the world celebrating Hindu Americans,” the proclamation added.
The proclamation also acknowledges their contribution to society and culture through the Vedanta philosophy, Ayurvedic medicine, classical Indian art, dance, music, meditation, yoga and literature. It also highlights that this year marks the 130th anniversary of Hinduism being introduced in the US by Swami Vivekananda at the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago.
The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) lauded the move by the Dublin City Council. “We are elated by the City of Dublin's recent issuance of a Hindu American Awareness and Appreciation Proclamation. During the event, @HinduAmerican took the opportunity to educate both officials and the community about the pressing issue of Hinduphobia, receiving appreciation from the Mayor for our efforts in raising awareness and fostering understanding within the city. #HAAAM,” the organization said in a post on X.
