Sharan Srinivas, an assistant professor of industrial and systems engineering at Mizzou Engineering, is leading the charge in the transformation of last-mile logistics with the assistance of a Partnerships for Innovation – Technology Translation (PFI-TT) grant.

Last-mile logistics refers to the final step in the delivery process, where products are transported from a distribution center to the customer's location. The global last-mile logistics sector, which represents 41 percent of total supply costs and significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

Srinivas’ work is centered on developing a cloud-based route optimization platform that will seamlessly integrate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and electric trucks, addressing the critical challenges of efficiency and sustainability in delivery operations.

“This innovative project tackles crucial technical challenges, such as the integration of vehicle routing and network communications,” said Srinivas. “We are developing new optimization models and heuristic methods tailored to solve the unique routing problems presented by these technologies.”

His work is expected to not only enhance fleet utilization and reduce operational costs but also significantly lower the carbon footprint of delivery operations.“The application of this technology extends beyond e-commerce,” Srinivas emphasized.

“It has the potential to revolutionize critical areas like medical deliveries, emergency responses, and humanitarian operations, providing reliable and efficient delivery solutions,” he said.
