Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) has announced that its 2025 commencement address will be delivered by former UK prime minister Rishi Sunak and investor-philanthropist Akshata Murty.
The couple, both Stanford GSB alumni, will speak at the graduation ceremony on June 14 as part of the school’s centennial celebrations.
Sunak served as the 57th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 2022 to July 2024. Prior to his premiership, he was the Chancellor of the Exchequer, playing a pivotal role in formulating the UK's economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Elected to Parliament in 2015, Sunak continues to represent the constituency of Richmond and Northallerton in North Yorkshire. He has been appointed the William C. Edwards Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, focusing on trans-Atlantic relations, economic policy, technology, and global security challenges.
Murty, an investor and philanthropist, has dedicated over a decade to supporting early-stage, consumer-focused British companies. During her time at Downing Street, she initiated "Lessons at 10," a program designed to educate students about governmental operations.
Currently, she leads the Office of Akshata Murty & Rishi Sunak, promoting initiatives aimed at creating positive impacts in Britain, including the establishment of an education-focused charitable foundation. Murty also serves on the board of Claremont McKenna College, her undergraduate alma mater.
Interim dean Peter M. DeMarzo highlighted the significance of their participation, stating, "Together, Akshata and Rishi exemplify the leaders we strive to develop here at Stanford GSB – those who bridge business, government, and society. As we celebrate our graduates – and our centennial year – I look forward to hearing our speakers' reflections on their journey from Stanford to the world stage."
Murty and Sunak's relationship began during their time as MBA students at Stanford GSB, culminating in their marriage in 2009.
