Payal Kapadia’s critically acclaimed All We Imagine as Light has received nominations in the Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Best Film not in the English Language categories at the BAFTA Film Awards 2025.
The Malayalam-language film, starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam, continues its award-season momentum after clinching the Grand Prix prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024.
This recognition comes as Kapadia prepares for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, set to take place on Jan.6, 2025. The film has secured two nominations at the Golden Globes for Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film, further solidifying its position on the global stage.
Kapadia faces stiff competition at the BAFTA in the Best Director category from Sean Baker, Brady Corbet, and Denis Villeneuve. Meanwhile, Black Dog, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Emilia Perez are frontrunners in the Best Film not in the English Language category.
All We Imagine as Light, which recently dropped on Disney+ Hotstar, explores the emotional landscape of three women working as nurses in Mumbai, capturing their experiences of loneliness and resilience in the bustling city. The film, praised for its poignant storytelling, won the Best International Feature at the Gotham Awards in December 2024 and even topped former US President Barack Obama’s list of recommended films for the year.
However, the film made headlines recently when it was not selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars by the Film Federation of India (FFI). Instead, Kiran Rao’s Laapata Ladies was chosen but failed to progress in the Oscars race. Interestingly, All We Imagine as Light, an international co-production, was shortlisted by France as a potential submission for the Oscars.
All eyes will be on Kapadia at the Golden Globes, where she stands a chance to make history as the first Indian filmmaker nominated in the Best Director category. If she wins, it would mark a groundbreaking achievement for Indian cinema on the global stage, though the category remains highly competitive in a season without a clear frontrunner.
