Allegheny Health Network names Indian American cardiologist as chair of Cardiovascular Medicine
In Khandelwal’s new appointment as the Gerald E. McGinnis Chair, he will be responsible for advancing cardiovascular treatments at Allegheny Health Network.

The Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has named Indian-American interventional cardiologist Akshay Khandelwal as the Gerald E. McGinnis Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine, a role made possible by a $2 million endowment from the family of the late Gerald "Jerry" E. McGinnis.
Khandelwal currently serves as chair of AHN’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine within the AHN Cardiovascular Institute.
The endowed chair honors the legacy of McGinnis, a visionary bioengineer and founder of Respironics, whose work alongside cardiovascular pioneer Dr. George Magovern, Sr. at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) paved the way for significant advancements in cardiac care.
The endowed chair, one of eight within the nationally recognized AHN Cardiovascular Institute, is designated to support prominent physicians in advancing therapies for complex cardiovascular disease.
Khandelwal, who is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, joined AHN in 2023 and has emphasized multidisciplinary collaboration among AHN cardiologists and surgical teams, working to improve patient outcomes through coordinated, comprehensive cardiovascular care. His expertise includes advanced catheter-based techniques and complex coronary interventions, such as angioplasty and stent placements.
Welcoming Khandelwal's appointment, Stephen Bailey, chair of the AHN cardiovascular institute, praised both Khandelwal’s dedication and his alignment with McGinnis’ legacy. “They are both problem-solvers,” Bailey said in a tribute video shown at the appointment event, adding that Khandelwal was an ideal choice for the role.
Khandelwal expressed gratitude for the McGinnis family’s generosity, calling it a fitting tribute to McGinnis' legacy of innovation and commitment to healthcare.
"On behalf of the Cardiovascular Institute and Allegheny Health Network, I want to extend our sincere thanks to the entire McGinnis family for their remarkable generosity and support to help us continue advancing the frontier of cardiovascular medicine. This endowment is another fitting tribute to the incredible legacy of Jerry McGinnis and everything he accomplished in his remarkable life and career," said Khandelwal.
Khandelwal went to medical school at Bangalore University’s Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College in Karnataka, India. He did his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
