American expat defends decision to leave US for a ‘richer life’ in India

An American woman residing in Delhi for the past two years recently stirred discussions online after sharing a video on social media addressing the merits of living in India versus the United States.
Kristen Fischer, a content creator at SkyFish Development, took to Instagram to explain why she relocated from the US to India, claiming the latter offers a superior quality of life for her and her family.
“It is always the same question, ‘Why in the world would I want to leave America and move to India?’” Fischer said in the video, dispelling two common stereotypes about both countries. She explained that, for her, India offers a richer, more meaningful lifestyle that she believes will set her children up for future success.
“I think my kids are being set up for a more successful life and future in India,” Fischer elaborated. “They will have such a rich life, experiences, and community that they would never have gotten in the US”
She emphasized that while the US might be ideal for those focused on financial gain, India provides a deeper sense of personal growth and fulfillment. Fischer’s decision has sparked a wave of responses from her 58,000 followers, with opinions ranging from strong agreement to contrasting perspectives.
One Instagram user echoed Fischer’s views, stating, “Making money in the US is not easy. The cost of living is too high. Purchasing power in India is far better than in the US, and people in India with different socio-economic backgrounds live cohesively.”
However, not everyone agreed. One commenter raised safety concerns, writing, “India is not safe for women.” In response, another pointed out, “Neither is America. In that sense, Germany and Scandinavian countries are far better. And Israel, surprisingly.”
Another viewer, identifying as a foreigner, weighed in with a positive perspective on life in India. “Perfectly said. I’m Tibetan, born and raised in India, but now a Dutch citizen. When I was in India, my life was way better regarding my mind and health. You never feel alone. I’m thinking of moving back to India next year!”
