Amit Gupta, an Indian nephrologist, has been named the recipient of the prestigious International Society of Nephrology (ISN) Pioneer Award for the South Asia region.
He was honored for his outstanding contributions to nephrology at the ISN World Congress of Nephrology (WCN), held from Feb.6 to Feb.9 in New Delhi, India. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in kidney care, research, and clinical practice, celebrating excellence in the field of nephrology.
Reacting to the recognition, Professor Gupta said, “I am absolutely thrilled, overwhelmed, and humbled to receive this award and would like to express my gratitude to the ISN for selecting me.”
Professor Gupta currently serves as chairman and head of the department of nephrology and renal transplantation at the Apollomedics Super Specialty Hospital in Lucknow, India.
Before this, he had worked at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow, where he served from August 1987 until his retirement in 2020 as Professor and Head of the Department of Nephrology & Renal Transplantation.
Professor Gupta received his nephrology training at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and went on to pursue advanced training at Guys Hospital in London, UK, and Toronto Hospital in Ontario, Canada.
One of his most notable achievements was initiating the continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) program at SGPGIMS in 1993, which evolved into one of the largest peritoneal dialysis programs in India and South Asia. He has also served as President of the Indian Society of Nephrology (2009–2010) and President of the Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India (2004–2005).
Apart from Professor Gupta, ISN also honored several other distinguished nephrologists from around the world. The award recipients included Boucar Diouf (Senegal) for Africa, Liliana Garneata (Romania) for Eastern and Central Europe, Ana María Cusumano (Argentina) for Latin America, Shahrzad Ossareh (Iran) for the Middle East, Lidia Lysenko (Russia) for NIS and Russia, Everard N. Barton (Jamaica) for North America and the Caribbean, Fan Fan Hou (China) for North and East Asia, and Kriang Tungsanga (Thailand) for the Oceania and South East Asia (OSEA) region.
