Michigan University distinguished professor Anil K. Jain has been honored with the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the category of Information and Communication Technologies.

The award recognizes his foundational contributions to machine learning, which have enabled transformative applications in biometrics and artificial intelligence. Jain shares the award with Michael I. Jordan of the University of California, Berkeley, for his pioneering work in predictive algorithms.

The Frontiers of Knowledge Awards, established in 2008, are among the world’s most prestigious honors, celebrating impactful contributions across eight categories, including sciences, technology, humanities, and music. The awards aim to highlight the value of knowledge as a global public good.

Jain, often referred to as “the father of fingerprint recognition” and a pioneer in iris recognition, has driven significant advancements in biometric technologies. His contributions to fingerprint and facial recognition systems have played a critical role in shaping security technologies used in criminal investigations, personal devices, and broader societal applications.

The award committee noted that Jain’s work has left "an indelible stamp on the fabric of today’s – and tomorrow’s – information-rich society.”

John Papapolymerou, interim dean of the College of Engineering at Michigan State University, praised Jain’s achievement, stating, “This award shines a light on the depth and breadth of his work at Michigan State University and demonstrates how transformative technologies improve our society in meaningful ways.”

Jain has authored numerous seminal papers and books, including Handbook of Fingerprint Recognition and Introduction to Biometrics. With an h-index of 220 and over 275,000 citations, his work is highly regarded in the academic and technology communities. He holds a dozen patents and has served as editor-in-chief of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence.

Born in Basti, India, in 1948, Jain earned his B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and later completed his master of science and doctorate. in electrical engineering at The Ohio State University.

Since joining Michigan State University in 1974, Jain has held visiting appointments at leading institutions, including ETH Zurich, IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center, and the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. He has also been an Amazon Scholar since 2021.

Jain is a member of the National Academy of Engineering (USA), Indian National Academy of Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and The World Academy of Sciences. He has been recognized with honorary doctorates from universities in Madrid, Hong Kong, and other institutions for his contributions to pattern recognition and biometrics.
