Indian American scholars Anima Anandkumar and Shrikanth Narayanan have been named recipients of the 2025 IEEE Technical Field Awards, presented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in recognition of their contributions to technology and engineering.

Anima Anandkumar, the Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Caltech, has been awarded the IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award. Her work has been transformative in developing unifying theoretical frameworks for machine learning algorithms, significantly impacting various scientific fields.

Anandkumar’s AI applications range from modeling COVID-19 aerosolized particles to designing faster cars, improving drone landing techniques, and enhancing drug design methods.

The IEEE commended Anandkumar "for contributions to AI, including tensor methods and neural operators with applications to scientific domains." "I'm really honored, and I didn't have any expectation of receiving this award because it's a very broad award covering many different fields," says Anandkumar. "Also, when I look at the previous recipients, I hold them in such high regard. It is truly an honor to be part of this group."

Shrikanth Narayanan, a professor at the University of Southern California, has been awarded the IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award. Narayanan is recognized for his interdisciplinary work in human-centered signal processing and machine intelligence, particularly in speech and spoken language processing.

Narayanan's pioneering research has led to numerous acclaimed patents and hundreds of publications, cementing his reputation as a leading figure in his field. His contributions span computational speech science, audio and multimedia engineering, and affective computing, impacting areas such as mental health, national defense, and media arts.

The IEEE Technical Field Awards (TFAs), part of the IEEE Awards Portfolio, are presented by the IEEE Board of Directors but managed by the IEEE Awards Board. Each award is determined by a selection committee of experts, endorsed by the Awards Board, and finally approved by the IEEE Board of Directors. The TFAs are given for contributions or leadership in specific fields of interest to the IEEE and are presented by the IEEE President or designee at an IEEE technical conference or symposium.
