EMILYs List, which supports Democratic women who advocate for reproductive rights, announced six nominees for this year’s award, praising them as critical leaders at a time when, it says, Republicans are working to "take this country backwards”.
Sundareshan, who represents Arizona’s 18th Senate District, has quickly emerged as a powerful voice on voting rights, environmental protection, and public health. EMILYs List highlighted her commitment to reproductive rights, noting her opposition to extreme abortion bans and her 2024 introduction of a bill to enshrine the right to contraception into Arizona law.
As the Minority Leader in the Arizona Senate, Sundareshan serves as the ranking member on the Senate Federalism Committee and also sits on the Rules and Natural Resources committees. In 2023, she was recognized nationally with the Rising Environmental Leader Award from the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators.
A mother of two, Sundareshan has long emphasized science-based policymaking to shape a better future for the next generation, EMILYs List noted. Before her political career, she was an attorney specializing in sustainability, climate change, and natural resource protection and directed the Natural Resource Use and Management Clinic at the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law. She also played a key role in voter protection efforts and redistricting engagement within the Arizona Democratic Party.
Born to an Indian American family in Tucson, Arizona, Sundareshan earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2006. She later obtained both a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and a Master of Science in natural resource economics from the University of Arizona in 2011.
The Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award is named after former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who has been a vocal advocate for gun control and democracy following an assassination attempt in 2011. EMILYs List will announce the winner later this year.
