During the event, the Consul General of India in New York presented Bihar Vishwa Gaurav Samman Awards to four distinguished community leaders– Prakash Jha, Abhishek Tiwary, Sharad Kumar, and Mahesh Kumar. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by individuals of Bihari origin to society, business, and culture.

Choudhary acknowledged Mahesh Kumar, founder of Tiger Analytics, for fostering an IT presence in Patna and inspiring local entrepreneurship. “NRIs must give back to their roots and work for their land,” he said, urging the diaspora to contribute to Bihar’s development.

Consul General Binaya Pradhan acknowledged Bihar’s contributions to Indian education, history, and culture, mentioning Nalanda University, regarded as the world’s first residential university and a renowned center of Buddhist learning; India’s first President Dr. Rajendra Prasad and mathematician Aryabhata, who introduced the concept of zero and made significant advancements in trigonometry and astronomy.

“We as the Consulate General of India feel very happy that we celebrate such important days along with the Indian community. The Indian diaspora is doing tremendously well in this country and has remained deeply connected with India not only culturally but also through philanthropic activities, promoting investment, and strengthening economic linkages between India and the United States,” said Pradhan.

Addressing the gathering, Kundan Kumar, CEO of Bihar Foundation Patna, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to the global Bihari diaspora. He announced the establishment of a dedicated grievance cell to address concerns faced by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and strengthen their connection with Bihar.

Community leaders, including Dr. Avinash Gupta (president, FIA NY-NJ-CT-NE), Saurin Parikh (chairman, FIA), Sanjeev Singh (president, BJANA), and Alok Kumar (chairman, Bihar Foundation USA – East Coast), emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties between Janmabhoomi (birthplace) and Karmabhoomi (workplace).

The event paid special tribute to the late Padma Bhushan awardee Sharda Sinha, whose contributions to Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi folk music were honored through a video presentation.

The event also marked the 50-year jubilee of the Bihar Jharkhand Association of North America, recognizing its role in strengthening ties within the diaspora and promoting Bihar’s cultural heritage abroad. In recognition of his continued support and encouragement to the diaspora, Bihar Foundation USA East Coast and BJANA jointly presented a Thank You Award to CGI Pradhan for his service and collaboration.

Bihar Diwas is observed annually on March 22 to commemorate the formation of the state in 1912, when it was carved out of Bengal by the British.
