Peel Regional Police have charged Ashok Kumar, a 69-year-old religious leader from Brampton, with one count of sexual assault in connection with an alleged incident during a religious ceremony.
According to police, Kumar—who is also known as Ashok Sharma—visited the victim’s residence on Mar.3 to perform a religious ritual. During the visit, he allegedly sexually assaulted the victim.
On Mar.7, investigators from the Special Victims Unit arrested Kumar. He is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date.
Police said Kumar has been a religious leader in the Brampton community for several years and believe there may be additional victims.
