Over 700 senior citizens of Indian community members gathered to celebrate the 16th Annual Deepawali Gala at the Ganesh Temple Auditorium in New York on Nov. 16, hosted by BRUHUD New York Seniors.
Rekha Bhandari, an expert in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care, addressed the growing concern of loneliness among seniors, particularly within the Indian community, stating, “The biggest epidemic among seniors is loneliness. Their problems are unique due to language and racial issues.”
Prem Bhandari, chairman of Jaipur Foot USA, was the chief guest for the evening and shared exciting news about two upcoming Jaipur Foot camps in Gujarat, scheduled for January 2025. Bhandari stressed, “We may have different organizations promoting state-wise culture and heritage, but when it comes to unity, we must stand together as one.”
BRUHUD president Ajay Patel is hosting camps for the tribal community at Mahudi Jain Teerth and Dang in memory of his father, Shashikant Bhai Patel, who founded BRUHUD in 2009.
D.R. Mehta, founder of Jaipur Foot, shared that a camp at Somnath Temple has helped 300 people, with 300 more expected by Nov. 23.
The gala also recognized notable individuals for their contributions to the community, including Varun Jeph, Mohan Nannapaneni, and Girish from Air India.
The evening concluded with lively Bollywood music performances, making it a memorable celebration for the Indian diaspora.
