Call for probe into deaths in India's town of Sambhal

Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR) has condemned the killing of five Muslim protesters during a police clash in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.
The clashes took place over a court-ordered survey of the historic Shahi Jama Masjid. The incident occurred amid rising tensions, with reports of Hindutva groups chanting slogans at the site.
Family members of the victims allege that the deaths resulted from police firing, a claim partly corroborated by the Moradabad Divisional Commissioner, who confirmed that three victims sustained fatal bullet injuries.
“The escalation of violence in Sambhal underscores the dangerous climate for India’s Muslims,” said Sunita Viswanath, executive director of Hindus for Human Rights. “These deaths demand accountability, justice, and an immediate end to violence.”
Ria Chakrabarty, senior policy director of Hindus for Human Rights, stated, “The deaths in Sambhal are part of a broader pattern of repression against India’s Muslims. The actions that led to this violence highlight the need for justice and accountability.”
HfHR urged civil society, human rights organizations, and the global community to:
Demand an independent investigation into the killings.
Advocate for the protection of minorities in India.
Hold authorities accountable for ensuring law and order.
“These lives lost are a stark reminder of the need to protect constitutional values and uphold justice,” added Viswanath.
