Call for transparency after Matt Gaetz withdraws as Trump’s AG pick

Indian American lawmakers have reacted strongly to former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrawing his nomination for attorney general amid controversy over a congressional report on sexual misconduct allegations.
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi emphasized the importance of transparency in the selection of high-ranking officials, writing on X, “FBI background checks help determine if a candidate can be potentially compromised, which would threaten our national security. The incoming Trump administration must make all cabinet candidates available for these critical checks.”
Rep. Shri Thanedar called for the release of the House Ethics Committee report tied to the allegations, stating, “While Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name from consideration to be the next Attorney General, as a member of the House, I still believe the public deserves to see the House Ethics Committee report into the allegations against now former Congressman Gaetz. Release it now.”
Gaetz announced his withdrawal on Nov.22, citing the controversy as an unnecessary distraction to President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration. On X, the 42-year-old wrote, “The justice department must be in place and ready on the first day of [Trump’s] administration in January.” Gaetz thanked Trump for the nomination and vowed continued support for his presidency.
The House Ethics Committee recently deliberated over releasing the report, which contains findings from an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. The committee, however, remains divided on the matter.
Michael Guest, the committee’s chairman, stated that Gaetz’s withdrawal “should end the discussion of whether or not the ethics committee should move forward in this matter,” adding that Gaetz’s resignation from Congress last week effectively closed the chapter on his House-related conduct.
