As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his decision to step down from the leadership of the Liberal Party, Canadian lawmakers from his party have come forward to thank him for his years of public service. Trudeau’s leadership has been a defining force in Canadian politics since he first took office in 2015, and his decision to step down marks the end of an era.
A former Cabinet Minister and a confidant of Justin Trudeau, Navdeep Bains, wrote on social media, “I saw firsthand how hard Justin worked for Canadians and the big things he accomplished for Canada. The PM’s positive message of hope and optimism helped Canada navigate through some difficult times over the past decade. Thank you for your service and leadership my friend.
Another Liberal MP of South Asian descent, Sikh Dhaliwal, also commented on social media, saying, ”Thank you Justin Trudeau for your dedicated leadership and unwavering commitment to building a stronger, better Canada. Your years of service and courage have left a lasting impact on our country. It has been an honour to serve alongside you."
Transport Minister Anita Anand, who is a serious contender for Liberal leadership, also took to her social media handle to say, “Thank you, Prime Minister. Thank you for your leadership and for your dedication to our country. It has been an honour and privilege to serve Canadians with you."
Harjit Singh Sajjan, first MP of South Asian descent to become Defence Minister of Canada, also turned nostalgic in his social media message saying, “Justin Trudeau, for the better part of a decade, you have led our Liberal government with integrity, passion, and dedication. Working tirelessly to make a positive difference here in Canada and around the world. Serving alongside you is a great privilege. I am deeply honoured for the trust you placed in me. Thank you, friend. It is with heartfelt gratitude that I wish you all the best."
Maninder Sidhu, a Parliamentary Secretary, also joined others in recalling his times with the outgoing Canadian PM, saying, ”It has been an honour and privilege to work with Prime Minister Trudeau over the last 5 years. I am thankful for his service and contributions to Canada. The sacrifices the PM and his family have made to serve Canadians have led to monumental initiatives to support families in Brampton and across Canada. The first ever National Childcare System which has lowered costs significantly, saving parents in Peel up to $15,000 in childcare fees. The first ever Canadian Dental Care Plan ensuring seniors and children have access to vital dental care. The first ever Canada School Food Program supporting 160,000 kids in Ontario with healthy meals. Canada now joins all other G7 countries with a national school food program."
Randeep Serai, another Liberal MP, said, ” Thank you, PM Justin Trudeau for your vision and leadership in delivering transformative progress for Canadians. From the Canada Child Benefit & $10/day childcare to Dental Care, Pharmacare & guiding us through a global pandemic, your legacy is one our country can be proud of."
The only Liberal MP of South Asian descent from Quebec, Anju Dhillon, too was emotional in her social media post, saying, ” It is a heartbreaking moment. The resignation of our Right Honourable PM Justin Trudeau marks the end of an era of visionary leadership. As time passes, the realization of just what he means to Canada’s progress and success will become apparent."
Christia Freeland wrote, ” I thank Justin Trudeau for his years of service to Canada and Canadians. I wish him and his family the very best."
Former Premier of British Columbia and a candidate for Liberal leadership Christie Clark, wrote, ”After a lifetime of public service Justin Trudeau has stepped aside as both Leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister of Canada. I want to thank him as a Canadian for his service to the country that he so clearly loves. I wish him and his family well. As a lifelong Liberal I look forward to joining tens of thousands of Canadians to choose our next Leader. This is the biggest opportunity in over a decade that we’ve had to grow our Party and welcome new Liberals - including Canadians concerned about the future of our country - let’s seize it!"
A former Premier of Ontario and presently Canadian Ambassador to the US, Bob Rae, was also full of praise for Justin Trudeau in saying, "Prime Minister Trudeau was a colleague in Parliament , successor as Leader of the Liberal Party, and is my boss as Prime Minister in my work at the United Nations. I admire his commitment to Canada, his respect for Canada’s international obligations, and his love of Canadians."
