Cornell University has named Kavita Bala, dean of Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (Cornell Bowers CIS), as its 17th provost, interim president Michael I. Kotlikoff announced on Sept. 25.

Bala's appointment, approved by the executive committee of the Cornell board of trustees, will take effect on Jan.1, 2024, for a five-year term.

"Kavita has done an outstanding job as dean of Cornell Bowers CIS, shepherding the college's growth and fostering innovation,” said Kotlikoff. "She'll now bring her talents to the entire university as provost."

Bala, an expert in computer vision and graphics, succeeds interim provost John Siliciano, who has served in the role since July 2023. Bala expressed her excitement about her new role, stating, "It is an incredible honor and privilege to serve as Cornell’s next provost. I hope to foster an environment where all Cornellians can realize their intellectual potential."

As provost, Bala will oversee academic programs, strategic planning, budgeting, and research initiatives. Bala has spent 25 years at Cornell, and during her tenure as dean of Cornell Bowers CIS, she increased faculty by 30 percent and helped secure funds for a new building.

Bala earned her bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and her master’s and doctoral degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
