The Dance Studies Association’s Asian and Asian Diaspora Dance Studies Working Group is gearing up to present the second edition of its New Books in Asian and Asian Diaspora Dance Studies Virtual Series. This event, set to unfold in a series of online sessions, offers a platform to explore groundbreaking works in Asian and diaspora dance studies, fostering scholarly discussions and connections across the globe.

Spotlight on Pioneering Authors and Scholars

The virtual series aims to spotlight influential authors and scholars in the field, featuring engaging presentations and discussions. Past sessions have included contributions from notable figures such as SanSan Kwan and Michael Sakamoto, who explored topics like intercultural collaboration and social dynamics through dance. This year’s series will continue this tradition, highlighting works that delve into themes of identity, performance, and cultural exchange.

Scheduled to commence in 2024, the event will include interactive dialogues with authors about their recent publications. These sessions are open to all and do not require Dance Studies Association membership, although registration is necessary for access to the discussions.

Fostering Global Dance Scholarship

The New Books series serves as an intellectual hub, connecting scholars, practitioners, and enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. By focusing on Asian and diaspora dance studies, the initiative addresses gaps in representation within the broader field of dance scholarship. This year’s event will likely continue to explore the evolving intersections of traditional practices and contemporary innovations, reflecting the rich diversity of Asian dance cultures.

The virtual format ensures that participants from around the world can join, eliminating geographical barriers to access. Discussions will include live Q&A segments, encouraging active engagement between presenters and attendees. The initiative exemplifies the Dance Studies Association's commitment to creating inclusive and collaborative spaces for scholarly exchange.
