Data reveals 86 Indians attacked or murdered abroad in 2023
Most assaults took place in the US, UK and Canada, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said.

The Ministry of External Affairs has provided data on crimes against Indian nationals abroad, revealing that 86 Indians were attacked or murdered in 2023.
The breakdown includes 12 incidents in the United States and 10 each in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia. However, detailed information on culprits arrested, convicted, and the punishments awarded in these cases was not available, the Ministry stated.
Responding to a parliamentary query, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh emphasized that the safety and security of Indians abroad remain a "foremost priority" for the government.
“Our Missions and Posts remain vigilant and closely monitor any untoward incident,” he said. “Such incidents are immediately taken up with the concerned authorities of the host country to ensure proper investigation and punishment of perpetrators.”
Speaking of hate crimes specifically targeting Indians and Hindus, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests of Indian nationals abroad. It noted that issues of concern are raised with host country officials, including at the highest levels when necessary.
Indian Missions and Posts provide consular assistance as required and operate 24x7 helplines for Indian nationals. “The Government remains vigilant to developments impacting the lives of Indians abroad and takes all measures to safeguard their interests and welfare,” Singh added.
While the Ministry has not shared a country-wise, incident-wise list of arrests or convictions for crimes against Indians, it underscored the importance of international cooperation and dialogue to address these concerns effectively.
