North Carolina’s Davidson College has announced the appointment of Saj Thakkar as the 29th head football coach. He will be introduced at a press conference on Dec. 20 inside Gallery 18 of the Davidson College Stadium.
Thakkar joins Davidson after serving as head coach at Bentley University, where he led the NCAA Division II program to a 14-6 overall record over two seasons. Under his leadership, Bentley secured back-to-back second-place finishes in the Northeast-10 Conference, with 24 players earning all-league honors. His teams consistently ranked among the league’s top offensive and defensive performers.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be the head football coach at Davidson College,” Thakkar said. “My family and I are truly honored to be a part of this exceptional community. It became clear through the search process that Davidson is committed to excellence on and off the football field. I would especially like to thank my wife, Bobbi-Jo, for her constant encouragement throughout this journey and to director of athletics Chris Clunie and president Hicks for this tremendous opportunity.”
“We are extremely excited to have Saj on board as the next leader of Davidson Football. He understands the high academic and athletic balance and is committed to building an innovative, dynamic, and sustainable championship competitive program. We are thrilled to welcome him and his family to the Davidson community,” said Davidson athletic director Chris Clunie.
Before Bentley, Thakkar spent five seasons as the running backs coach at Harvard University and three seasons at SUNY-Maritime, where he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also participated in the NFL's Bill Walsh Fellowship, working with the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans. A native of Wakefield, Massachusetts, Thakkar played wide receiver and quarterback at Fitchburg State University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration.
Thakkar said he plans to develop Davidson into a top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program while prioritizing the scholar-athlete experience. “Our fans and supporters can expect to see a team that upholds the highest standard of the game,” he said. “We will make the entire Davidson community proud to be Wildcats.”
