An Indian-origin bioengineer and alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania, Deepak Prabhakar, will be honored at the 2024 Alumni Award of Merit Gala on Friday, Nov. 15.

Prabhakar, who earned both his bachelor's degree in bioengineering in 2011 and a master's in biotechnology in 2012 from Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, will receive the Young Alumni Award for his continued service and leadership within the Penn alumni community.

Since 2016, Prabhakar has served as the Class of 2011 president, rallying alumni around reunions, campaigns, and volunteer activities. His dedication to the university’s traditions dates back to his undergraduate days, where he was actively involved in student organizations like the Penn traditions undergraduate board, the senior class executive board, and the Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity. His efforts earned him the Penn Alumni Student Award of Merit in 2011.

In his professional career, Prabhakar has made significant contributions to healthcare technology, focusing on improving patient access to assistance programs. He has held leadership roles in companies such as DexCare and TailorMed, developing solutions to automate assistance applications and claims for prescribers and dispensers, driving greater efficiency in patient engagement.

At the gala, Prabhakar will be honored alongside other distinguished alumni, including Belinda Bentzin Buscher, Ira Hillman, Jennifer Krevitt, Sally Jutabha Michaels, and Marc H. Morial, all recipients of the Alumni Award of Merit.
