The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has congratulated Democratic candidates Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh for their victories in Virginia's closely watched legislative special elections. Srinivasan won the open Senate District 32 seat, while Singh secured a win in the House District 26 race.

These wins ensure that Democrats will maintain their majority in both chambers of the Virginia legislature, safeguarding the state from what the party calls the "extremism of Donald Trump and Glenn Youngkin”.

“The DNC congratulates Democratic candidates Del. Kannan Srinivasan in the open Virginia Senate District 32 seat and JJ Singh in the open Virginia House District 26 seat for their victories in tonight’s crucial special elections,” said DNC deputy executive director Roger Lau. “As we face increasing extremism at the federal level, it’s more important than ever for Democrats to fight back in the states, build local power, and win elections up and down the ballot.”

Lau emphasized the importance of these victories in protecting critical policies in Virginia, including the codification of Roe v. Wade, expanding voting rights, and safeguarding marriage equality. He added, “These two tremendous candidates will continue Virginia’s economic growth and stand as a backstop against the extremism of Donald Trump and Glenn Youngkin.”

Democratic Party of Virginia chair Susan Swecker also praised the results, stating, “Today, voters in Loudoun County once again rejected Republican extremism by electing Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh. Their victories ensure that we maintain our majority in the General Assembly so we can continue passing legislation that benefits all Virginians while rejecting harmful policies.”

Kannan Srinivasan, a former delegate for Loudoun County, was vying for a seat in its state Senate in the special election. Srinivasan had previously made history as the first Indian immigrant elected to the House of Delegates in Virginia. Upon winning he wrote on X, “I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to continue serving our community. Thank you to every volunteer and my incredible team. Tonight, we celebrate. Tomorrow, the 2025 Legislative Session begins and we get right back to work!”

The son of Indian immigrants, JJ Singh also had made history as the first turbaned Sikh to serve in the Peace Corps and has worked at the White House Office of Management and Budget during the Obama administration. He wrote his winning statement on X, “Thank you House District 26 for putting your trust in me -- I am honored to represent the community that my family calls home. I'm ready to get to Richmond and get to work fighting for our values and deliver for Southeastern Loudoun County families!”

With Trump poised to take office, the DNC stressed that the victories for Srinivasan and Singh will be instrumental in keeping Virginia’s economy strong and defending fundamental rights in the state.

DLCC defends Democratic majorities

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) also highlighted the victories of Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh in Virginia's first major special elections of the year. Both candidates' wins secured the one-seat Democratic majorities in the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates, offering a crucial counterbalance to Republican control in Washington.

“These victories reinforce our Democratic majorities in Virginia and keep our critical firewall of Democratic state legislatures strong,” said DLCC president Heather Williams. “As Republicans take full control in Washington, the DLCC and our allies will continue to take advantage of every opportunity in the states to elect Democrats and build a strong counterweight to the incoming administration.”

Williams also emphasized the importance of preparing for Virginia’s off-year elections in November, when the entire House of Delegates will be on the ballot. The DLCC has already committed a six-figure investment to bolster infrastructure and support Democratic candidates in the upcoming electoral cycle.

“While we celebrate tonight, our focus is already on November,” Williams added. “With Trump and his MAGA allies returning to power, building and defending Democratic power in the states is essential.”
