The Indian finance minister said that the relationship between India and its overseas community is no longer just about sentiment or soft power, but about building a network of business and technological collaborations.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urged the Indian diaspora not only to nurture cultural ties with India, but to actively mentor and invest in the country’s booming startup ecosystem. She stressed that the relationship between India and the United States has grown far beyond ceremonial gestures, with the diaspora playing a central role in what she called an "action-related relationship”.

Speaking at a community reception hosted by the Consulate General of India in San Francisco on Apr.20, she said: “You can mentor startups in India. Where you're ready to fund some of them, you can choose your startups to fund them. You can become commercial and business partners with many of the Indian enterprises which are doing very well today." She added that "these are not favors that you need to do.”
