Prominent Indian American leaders gathered on Mar.30 for a special evening celebrating Kerala’s rich culinary traditions at Chatti. The high-end Kerala cuisine restaurant by Chef Regi Mathew opened in the heart of New York City on Feb. 12.
Ambassador Binaya Srikanta Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York, emphasized Kerala’s historical role in global trade and cuisine. Quoting historian William Dalrymple’s book The Golden Road, he noted that “the people who put Rome on ransom had demanded 5,000 pounds of gold and 3,000 pounds of Indian black pepper. So, the value of Indian spices from Kerala was worth its weight in gold in the ancient world.”
