Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. Bhadreshdas Swami, a Sanskrit scholar and head of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, has been awarded the Saraswati Samman 2024 for his Sanskrit publication, Swaminarayana Siddhanta Sudha. This marks the return of the prestigious literary award to Sanskrit literature after more than two decades.
Established in 1991 by the K.K. Birla Foundation, the Saraswati Samman is one of India's highest literary honors. It is awarded annually to an exceptional work of prose or poetry published in the last 10 years in any of the 22 languages recognized by the Indian Constitution.
The award includes a $17,536 (₹15 lakh cash) prize, a citation, and a plaque; past recipients include literary icons such as Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Mahasweta Devi, and S.L. Bhyrappa.
This year’s selection was made by the Saraswati Samman Chayan Parishad, chaired by Justice (Retd.) Arjan Kumar Sikri, along with a jury of eminent scholars.
Swaminarayana Siddhanta Sudha, published in 2022, presents the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan, a Vedantic philosophy revealed by Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Written in the traditional Vadagrantha style, it is both an exposition and a defense of this philosophy, praised for its clarity and relevance in bridging ancient traditions with contemporary thought.
Dr. Bhadreshdas Swami has made significant contributions to Sanskrit scholarship while working with the BAPS Swaminarayan Research Institute. His Swaminarayan Bhashyam, a five-volume Sanskrit commentary on the Prasthanatrayi (Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahmasutras), further establishes the Akshar-Purushottam Darshan as an independent Vedantic tradition.
Previously, Dr. Bhadreshdas Swami has received prestigious awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR), the Vedant Martand Sanman from Silpakorn University in Thailand, and the Mahamahopadhyaya title from Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University. He was also honored with the Acharya Pravar title by the Uttar Pradesh State Government and recognized for excellence in philosophy by Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow. Other accolades include the Darshankesari Award, the Professor G.M. Memorial Award from the University of Mysore, and the Vedant Prakash and Abhinav Bhashyakar Awards from Shree Somnath Sanskrit University.
The Shri Kashi Vidvat Parishad also recognized him as an Acharya in the lineage of classical Sanskrit commentators.
He holds an M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt., and an honorary D.Sc. from IIT Kharagpur. Mahant Swami Maharaj, the current spiritual leader and sixth successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, continues to inspire devotees worldwide with his wisdom, humility, and devotion.
