Esha Niyogi De's new book, 'Women’s Transborder Cinema: Authorship, Stardom, and Filmic Labor in South Asia', uncovers a previously overlooked chapter of South Asian cinema, focusing on women who both starred in and produced their own films across India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh during the latter half of the 20th century.
Published by the University of Illinois Press in December 2024, De’s work sheds light on these "star-authors," who not only dominated the screen but also crossed geographical and institutional boundaries as a form of resistance.
