FAMU-FSU names Rajan Kumar as mechanical engineering chair

Over his career, he has secured more than $30 million in research funding and aims to enhance education, faculty growth, and advance research and innovation.

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, a joint institute by Florida A&M University and Florida State University, has appointed aerospace engineer Rajan Kumar as the chair of its mechanical engineering department.

Kumar takes charge of the college’s largest department and succeeds William Oates, who served as department chair since 2021.

“I have strong confidence in Professor Kumar’s leadership and believe that, under his guidance, the department will continue to flourish and achieve new heights,” said Survranu De, dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

Kumar expressed his gratitude for the new role stating, “I am delighted to have this opportunity to serve as the chair,” Kumar said. “I would like to thank our dean and my colleagues in the department for entrusting me with this important position. I will do my best to provide quality education to our students and help the growth of our faculty and staff.”

During his career, Kumar has secured more than $30 million in research funding from organizations such as the Department of Defense, NASA, and the National Science Foundation. He has also published more than 150 papers in leading journals and conferences. His research focuses on experimental aerodynamics, supersonic and hypersonic flows, advanced flow diagnostics, active flow and noise control, and high-speed test facilities.

Kumar received his master’s and doctorate in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, in 2005.
