The number of Indian students traveling abroad, particularly in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, for higher education saw a sharp decline in 2024, according to the Indian Ministry of Education which cited data released by the Bureau of Immigration (BoI).
The data titled ‘Students Pursuing Study in Foreign Countries’ provided in response to a parliamentary query by Indian MP E.T. Mohammed Basheer, shows that a total of 759,064 Indian students cited "Study/Education" as their purpose of travel abroad in 2024, down significantly from 892,989 in 2023. The number was 750,365 in 2022, indicating that after a surge in 2023, student migration has dropped to nearly the same level as two years ago.
