Fiji launches Tamil teaching program

Fiji officially launched the Tamil Teaching Program on Nov. 27, marking a significant step in preserving and promoting one of the world's oldest classical languages in the region.
High Commissioner of India to Fiji, P. S. Karthigeyan, inaugurated the program during the opening of the 93rd Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam) Convention at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

The event also featured a vibrant Bharatnatyam performance by students of the Indian Cultural Centre in Suva, adding a cultural flourish to the occasion.
The program, funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of External Affairs, is being implemented in collaboration with the Fijian Ministry of Education, the Fiji Government, and the prominent diaspora organization, TISI Sangam.
Two Tamil language educators from India will be stationed at Sangam schools in Rakiraki and Labasa to facilitate the teaching initiative.
The program underscores a shared commitment to preserving Tamil heritage and fostering cross-cultural ties, reaffirming the enduring connection between India and Fiji's Tamil diaspora.
