As filmmaker Vidyut Latay arrived at the San Francisco International Airport with her husband, she encountered a jarring moment. Waiting at the immigration, she couldn't help but notice two distinct queues—one labelled "US citizens," the other "Aliens." Confused, she asked her husband if it meant something, and the answer left her deeply unsettled: That's the line for immigrants and non-US citizens. "Why would they call us "aliens?" Latay retorted. For her or any immigrant in her place, this was dehumanizing. But it ignited a fire within her to delve deeper into the immigrant experience.
