Five exceptional Indian students have been selected for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship 2025, joining a global cohort of scholars who will head to the University of Oxford in October 2025. 

The Rhodes Scholarship is one of the most esteemed academic honors in the world, awarded to outstanding individuals with a commitment to leadership and making a difference.

The scholars

Rayan Chakrabarti

Rayan Chakrabarti, an academic, poet, and translator, works at the intersection of memory studies, critical heritage, and anthropology. He is pursuing a Master’s in Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University and holds a Literature degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Rayan aims to establish an archive and museum chronicling the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact in South Asia, focusing on truth, reconciliation, and reparations.

Vibha Swaminathan

A law student at the National Law School of India University, Vibha Swaminathan has a B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. Vibha’s research focuses on the intersection of poverty, gender, religion, and language in citizenship laws. She has been active in citizenship litigation and human rights advocacy, drafting petitions and assisting lawyers on pro bono cases. At Oxford, she plans to delve into legal precarity in citizenship determination processes, combining public law with criminology and refugee studies.

Avanish Vats

Hailing from Ranchi, Avanish Vats has a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He conducted research on accessibility in education and healthcare for disabled individuals in Jharkhand. Avanish is a skilled tabla player and filmmaker, with academic interests in epistemology and making philosophy accessible to disabled people.

Shubham Narwal

Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry at ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, Shubham Narwal is passionate about nature conservation. He plans to study Clinical Embryology at Oxford to explore strategies for conserving the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard. Shubham is also an avid basketball player and a Harry Potter enthusiast.

Pal Aggarwal

Pal Aggarwal, a final-year B.Tech. student in Engineering Physics at IIT Bombay, has a passion for astrophysics, mathematics, and data science. Having collaborated with researchers at the National University of Singapore and the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, she aspires to pursue a DPhil in Astrophysics at Oxford. Pal dreams of becoming an astronaut and is a vocal advocate for women in science. Beyond academics, she is a trained Bharatnatyam and contemporary dancer with an interest in psychology.
