Google elevates Indian American Prabhakar Raghavan to chief technologist

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced key organizational shifts in a company-wide memo released on Oct 18, notably elevating the role of Prabhakar Raghavan, an Indian-American executive, to the role of chief technologist.
Raghavan, a seasoned leader with over 12 years at Google, has spearheaded innovation across multiple teams including Research, Workspace, Ads, and Knowledge and Information (K&I).
Most notably, he has played a crucial role in the development of AI-powered features, such as Smart Reply and Smart Compose for Gmail, and has led K&I in delivering groundbreaking advancements in Google Search and Ads. Under his leadership, the Gmail and Drive user bases surpassed 1 billion, reflecting the wide-reaching impact of his work.
In his new role, Raghavan will partner closely with Pichai and other key Google leaders to guide the company’s technical direction, focusing on advancing Google’s culture of technological excellence. This move comes as Google continues to position itself at the forefront of artificial intelligence, with Raghavan's expertise expected to further accelerate innovation within the company.
Raghavan's departure from the leadership of K&I paves the way for Nick Fox, another long-time Google executive, to take over as senior vice president. Fox has played an instrumental role in shaping Google’s AI product roadmap and is credited with launching innovative products like Google Fi and RCS messaging.
Pichai expressed gratitude for Raghavan’s leadership and the solid foundation he has built across the teams he led. He praised Raghavan’s achievements in AI-driven growth and innovation in products like Google Maps and Shopping. “Heartfelt thank you to Prabhakar for his leadership through numerous technology shifts and for building a strong foundation for the future,” Pichai noted.
Raghavan, originally from India, holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, and is regarded as a leading figure in the field of AI and search technologies.
