GOPIO-CT to host India’s 77th Independence day in Stamford

The event is organized by GOPIO-CT president Dr. Jaya Daptardar, with support from sponsors including First County Bank and Keller Williams Prestige Properties.

The Connecticut chapter of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO-CT) will mark India’s 77th Independence Day with a flag hoisting ceremony and India Festival in Stamford on Aug.11. 

The event will begin with the hoisting of the American, Indian, and Connecticut flags at the Stamford Government Center. An official ceremony will follow  at Mill River Park Carousel Hall, featuring prominent local officials, including Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons, Darien First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky, and Connecticut State Senators Ryan Fazio, Bob Duff, and Patricia Billie Miller.

The India Festival hosted later in the day will feature traditional Indian folk and classical dances, Bollywood performances, and kite flying. Vendors will offer Indian food, arts, crafts, and clothing. Admission to the event is free, and carousel rides will be available for children.

As part of the celebrations, Stamford resident Dr. Anita Mathur will receive the 2024 Indian Independence Liberty Award. DMathur, a longtime community volunteer and GOPIO-CT board member, has been recognized for her contributions to various local initiatives.

"The Indian American community has made significant strides in corporate America and the political arena," said Dr. Thomas Abraham, chairman of GOPIO International and advisor to GOPIO-CT. "In Connecticut, we are a growing community with a strong presence in IT, management, healthcare, and small businesses."
