Pomona College has announced that retired Indian American judge Halim Dhanidina will be one of the commencement speakers at the 2025 ceremony scheduled for May 18.
Dhanidina, a 1994 Pomona College graduate, created history as California's first Muslim judge and the state's first South Asian American appellate justice. He is widely experienced in criminal prosecution, private litigation, and arbitration.

Dhanidina served as a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles County for 14 years where he focused on prosecuting gangs and serious offenses. He was appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court by Governor Jerry Brown in 2012, and he was promoted to the California Court of Appeal, Second District, in 2018.
Dhanidina left the bench to work as a partner at Werksman, Jackson & Quinn LLP in private practice before joining Signature Resolution as an arbitrator and mediator. He also serves as a law professor at UCLA and UC Irvine.
In addition to practicing law, Dhanidina is involved with a number of organizations, such as Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the Public Law Center, and the South Asian Bar Association. His contributions to mentorship, judicial diversity, and legal education have received widespread recognition.
Born in Chicago, Dhanidina is of Gujarati Indian heritage. He co-chaired the Asia Pacific Islander Law Students Association while pursuing his Juris Doctor at UCLA School of Law. Before that, he formed the Muslim Students Association while earning a B.A. in International Relations from Pomona College in 1994.
