Hari Shukla, a prominent community leader and advocate for interfaith harmony, was honored with the Interfaith Leadership Award during the 40th Annual Interfaith Service and Multicultural Celebration last week, at the Church Center for the United Nations in New York.

Organized by Dileepkumar Thankappan, founder of the World Yoga Community Inc., the event drew participation from over 50 religious organizations, as well as officials from New York State and the NYC Faith Department.

Shukla, president and founder of South Asians of New York, was joined by other recipients of the award, including Dileep Guruji, secretary of Religious NGOs at the United Nations; Joni Carley, cosmos representative to the United Nations; and Rabbi George Matous, president of All Faiths Seminal International.

In his acceptance speech, Shukla highlighted the shared humanity that transcends racial and religious boundaries. “When you look at a person, you see him/her as a White, Black or Brown. When you look in more depth you see as a Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu,” he said.

Drawing on his medical background, he emphasized that treatment for conditions like pneumonia or high cholesterol remains the same regardless of race or religion. “As a medicine man , when you see in depth, it is a human. If a see a child with Pneumonia, treatment is same for White, Black or Brown. If someone has high Cholesterol, medicine is same for Christian, Jews, Muslim, Hindus. 99.99 percent of all humans are identical. That is why Hindu can donate blood to Christian if it matches and Jewish can donate organ to Muslim if it matches,” he noted

Shukla concluded by invoking the Sanskrit principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” meaning “the world is one family,” calling for unity and mutual respect among all people.
