IIT Kanpur strengthens alumni connections in Chicago through 'IIT Karvaan'
The highlight of the event was the keynote address by the Consul General of India in Chicago, Somnath Ghosh, himself an alumnus of IIT Kanpur.

IIT Kanpur's flagship initiative, ‘IIT Karvaan,’ aimed at reconnecting with its extensive global alumni network, recently made a stop in Chicago. The event drew nearly 80 alumni from the Chicago area, celebrating their shared legacy and exploring new ways to engage and support the institute’s future projects.
Previously held in New York and Washington D.C., the Chicago event is a part of IIT Kanpur's efforts to deepen alumni involvement across the United States.
The highlight of the event was the keynote address by the Consul General of India in Chicago, Somnath Ghosh, himself an alumnus of IIT Kanpur. Ghosh urged the alumni to shift their approach from merely "Giving Back" to "Paying Back" to their alma mater, describing it not as charity but as a responsibility. "We owe it to the institution that laid the foundation for our success," he emphasized, fostering a renewed sense of duty and pride among attendees. He also called on IIT Kanpur to explore collaboration opportunities with US universities.
The event featured prominent alumni, including Dr. Ruchir Puri, chief scientist of IBM Research, and Arvind Krishna, ceo of IBM, among others. Senior IIT Kanpur leaders, including director Prof. Manindra Agrawal, deputy director Braj Bhushan, and dean of resources and alumni prof. Amey Karkare, shared updates on the institute’s recent milestones and upcoming initiatives.

"Our alumni are the backbone of our institute, and their achievements across the globe fill us with immense pride," said Prof. Agrawal. "Through initiatives like IIT Karvaan, we aim to strengthen our connections with them, harness their expertise, and collaboratively work towards the growth and global impact of IIT Kanpur."
The IITK Chicago Chapter leader, Nitin Maheshwari, echoed the enthusiasm, highlighting the event’s success in rekindling connections. "The energy in the room was palpable, and it is clear that the IIT Kanpur community is as strong as ever," he said, urging alumni to engage more in chapter activities.
