IIT Madras Research Park launches Centre for 6G Communications
The newly inaugurated centre will serve as a hub for innovation, bringing together academic and industry experts to collaborate on cutting-edge projects.

A Centre for Excellence on “Classical and Quantum Communications for 6G” was launched by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) Research Park in Chennai, India. Indian telecom secretary Neeraj Mittal, inaugurated the centre in the presence of Sanjeev Kumar Bidwai, Sp DGT, Tamil Nadu and Kamakoti Veezhinathan, director IIT Madras on July 19.
Launched as a sub-centre of the Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCoE)-India, the new facility will spearhead the development and deployment of 6G technology, promising unprecedented speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced connectivity.
In his address, Secretary Mittal emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing 6G technology. He noted that the final selected proposals from the center will be categorized into groups based on their thematic and technical similarities.
To maximize the impact of R&D efforts, a comprehensive three-day workshop will be organized for the selected proposals. This initiative aims to create a cohesive and coordinated effort in advancing 6G technology, ensuring that all projects benefit from collective expertise and resources.
Hub for Innovation
The newly inaugurated centre will serve as a hub for innovation, bringing together academic and industry experts to collaborate on cutting-edge projects. This collaborative environment is expected to foster the development of new applications and services leveraging 6G's capabilities, and will play a crucial role in shaping the standards and infrastructure for 6G networks worldwide.
Moreover, the centre will facilitate interconnectivity with the existing 5G Test Bed at IIT Madras, developed through a collaborative project involving eight institutes and funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications. The 5G Test Bed, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2022, has been extensively used by industry and academia for testing new 5G products and use cases.
India’s 6G Vision
Prime Minister Modi had unveiled India’s ambitious 6G Vision, “Bharat 6G Vision,” on March 23, 2023. This vision aims for India to be a front-line contributor in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030. The vision is based on the principles of affordability, sustainability, and ubiquity, ensuring India’s leadership in providing advanced telecom technologies and solutions that are affordable and contribute to global good.
The 6th Generation technology, termed ‘IMT 2030’ by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), focuses on sustainability, security, resilience, connecting the unconnected, and ubiquitous intelligence. The ITU’s framework for 6G, approved on June 22, 2023, serves as a foundation document for global 6G research and development.
