Imperial College London will  inaugurate its most recent international hub in Bengaluru on May 21 aiming to boost collaboration between the UK and India in science, technology, and education.

The Imperial Global India hub will serve as a liaison office, connecting Imperial with Indian universities, industries, and policymakers. It will focus on advancing joint initiatives in areas such as AI, quantum computing, biotechnology, semiconductors, and critical minerals.

The hub will be co-directed by professor Sanjeev Gupta and Elena Dieckmann, who are leading research projects in India on groundwater depletion and sustainable materials, respectively. Both will spend time in India to strengthen academic and industry ties, the university said.

The initiative builds on Imperial’s “Science for Humanity” strategy, which includes a growing network of global hubs in San Francisco, Singapore, and Accra. The Bengaluru office will be managed by a local service provider until regulatory approvals are finalized.

Imperial already works with several Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science, IITs, and AIIMS, on projects ranging from climate resilience to infectious disease modeling. The new hub will formalize and expand these efforts, while also supporting student and early-career researcher exchanges.

Professor Hugh Brady, president of Imperial College London, said, “Imperial Global India will be a launchpad for powerful new collaborations in research, innovation and education between the UK and India. The hub will open communication channels with researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs and industry to apply cutting-edge science, technology and engineering solutions to shared global challenges in areas such as telecommunications, critical minerals, semiconductors, AI, quantum, biotechnology and advanced materials.”

Professor Sanjeev Gupta, the academic co-director for Imperial Global India, said, “India is buzzing with scientific creativity and technological innovation. Our aim is to build on our longstanding collaborations to forge deep and sustainable connections with academic and industry partners.”

Elena Dieckmann, the academic co-director for Imperial Global India, added, “The vision for Imperial Global India is incredibly exciting, particularly the potential to co-create and learn from the entrepreneurs in India's fast-paced and rapidly expanding innovation community.”

In 2023 Imperial launched the India Connect Fund which supports joint-projects between scientists in India and Imperial.
