India launches scholarship programme for diaspora children

Under the programme, students receive financial assistance covering up to 75% of their Institutional Economic Cost (IEC), capped at US$ 4,000 per year.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has opened applications for the Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) for the 2024-25 academic year. 

Launched in 2006, SPDC provides  financial support to children of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) enrolled in undergraduate programs at Indian universities. .

Under the programme, students receive financial assistance covering up to 75 percent of their Institutional Economic Cost (IEC), capped at US$ 4,000 per year. IEC includes tuition, hostel, and other institutional fees, although food costs are excluded.



According to the MEA, the scheme aims to make higher education in India more accessible to diaspora youth by easing financial burdens associated with university education. “The SPDC prioritizes merit-cum-means selection, providing deserving students with meaningful support,” an MEA official stated.

The is open to eligible applicants worldwide, with preference for female candidates, filling 50 percent of slots within each category. A total of 150 scholarships are available this year, including 50 reserved slots for children of Indian workers from Emigration Check Required (ECR) countries. Additionally, one-third of these reserved slots are for applicants who have completed their grade 11th and 12th education in India.

Applicants are required to have passed their grade 11th and 12th examinations from recognized educational systems abroad, with certain exceptions for children of Indian workers from ECR countries who have studied in India. Covered institutions include Central Universities, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Schools of Planning and Architecture, and ‘A’ Grade institutions accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Eligible students who have enrolled in undergraduate programs in the 2024-25 academic year can apply through the Ministry of External Affairs' official SPDC portal, with the scholarship covering students from the second year onward for those enrolled in medical courses. The application deadline is set for Nov. 30, 2024.
