India and the United States are set to begin sectoral expert-level discussions as part of ongoing negotiations for a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The decision follows four days of high-level talks between India’s Department of Commerce and the Office of the US Trade Representative, held in New Delhi from Mar.26-29, 2025.
The discussions, which stem from the India-US Joint Statement of Feb.13, 2025, aim to advance bilateral trade with a target of reaching $500 billion by 2030. Both sides have reached a broad understanding on the next steps toward a comprehensive and mutually beneficial trade pact, with the first tranche of the agreement expected to be finalized by fall 2025.
“In order to realize the shared objective of promoting growth that ensures fairness, national security, and job creation, both sides have... come to an understanding on the next steps towards a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement,” the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated.
The upcoming virtual sectoral engagements will lay the groundwork for an in-person negotiating round, marking significant progress in strengthening economic ties. Key areas of discussion included market access, tariff and non-tariff barriers, and supply chain integration.
The New Delhi meeting followed Union Commerce and Industries Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Washington, D.C., earlier in March, where he met US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Subsequent video conferences further advanced the dialogue between the two nations.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the discussions and reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral trade and investment relations. “These steps are designed to unlock new opportunities for businesses, drive bilateral economic integration, and reinforce the economic partnership between India and the United States,” the ministry’s statement noted.
